W.J. Usery, Jr. oral history collection [sound recording] 1987, Mar. 18 [Tape 09].

Usery continues his discussion of his work at Mr. Ennis's store and Mr. Ennis's financial responsibilites, and further relates his experience with the National Youth Administration (NYA). The Brunswick shipyard and his work there is described, followed by Usery's recounting of a baseball game in Jacksonville, Fla., that led to his quitting the shipyard, ending his deferment, and joining the Navy. Usery describes his experiences in Chicago, Ill., and at the nearby Great Lakes Naval Station. Although desiring Bainbridge, Ga. for his assignment, he was sent to the underwater welding school in San Diego, Calif. and from there was assigned to the USS Tutuila, berthed in Norfolk, Va.
